The price to be wireless

I have a hard wired Arlo camera that I have used for over a year with pretty flawless results, Not overly discreet as it has a cable trailing, but it works well and I have been able to check it effectively (even when out of the country) with no problems. These new ""fully independent"" set and forget wireless cameras promise much, but as with all things truly wireless there is a price to pay.I have these set to the highest battery saving mode, and only have them set to record motion (I'll come back to that) when I'm not at home for long periods, and basically have to recharge or replace the batteries every 10 days.Oftentimes there is a drop off on signal depending on distance from the router, and the motion sensor has some lagging issues, as in it turns on to record after the event, often missing it entirely. The picture quality is great, the app works well, and functionality as as good as the hard wired one, but what kills it for me is the battery life. At around $400 (at time of testing) these are well priced but consider that a professionally installed hard wired camera system which may cost double that will be less aggravation down the line.Paying to replace the batteries with rechargeable ones is not cheap, but it's the constant need to be taking the cameras down and recharging them that's the biggest pain. Also all of the batteries don't go flat at the same time so it feels like a non stop job.My home alarm company wanted me to upgrade to a fully wireless system which I declined as it would mean changing batteries in each sensor every 6-9 months, which I didn't want to do. So having to change these every 10 days makes me think someone at Arlo really dropped the ball, sorry.

I purchased the 6 camera kit and it only took me 90 minutes to install and set up the whole thing, including ladder time. Video quality is great and the nighttime IR works surprisingly well, illuminating the bulk of my rather large backyard

I love the Arlo System. I used to have a different Arlo model, but gave it to a friend. I've recently moved into a new place and wanted to have some surveillance for nighttime and during the day when I'm away from the house. I was so jazzed to see a 6-camera system and jumped on it as part of Amazon's Vine Program. This program provides Amazon items to me and I get to keep the item, but I have to write an honest review as part of the agreement. I am not compensated by the manufacturer, nor do I receive and money from Amazon. I love evaluating products and writing, so this is the perfect program for me. My review is totally honest and unbiased.SETUPSetup was amazingly simple and straight forward. 1. Download the app (which i already had on my phone and I used my existing account from my previous equipment). 2. Connect the base station to my internet router (I use Comcast/Xfinity in Portland, Oregon). 3. Launch the app and follow the simple on-screen instructions. 4. Sync each of the six cameras with the base station. As I synced each camera I renamed each with a number and a name in the app. I wrote the number underneath the camera using a Sharpie permanent marker with the number so I could keep track of the 6 cameras. In the app, I also named each camera to the location I planed to place the camera along with the camera number (front door, back door, hallway up, hallway down, kitchen window, bedroom window)Setup was easy, but what took some time is the firmware updates. Firmware is permanent software that resides on both the base station and the cameras. It is important to do the firmware updates, so the software is up-to-date - similar to updating your windows or apple operating system. The app will notify you if there needs to be a firmware update and it's very easy to do, it just takes a bit of time for each camera and base station. In my case the base station and each of the cameras needed to be updated.Setup took me a couple hours and was mainly time consuming to do the firmware updates. I would suggest having some concentrated quiet time for setup so that everything is done correctly. It's not difficult and I think anyone could set this system up - it's very simple!CAMERA INSTALLATIONThe Arlo cameras are a great design. They look apple-like (white and modern design) and they can either stand alone on a table or ledge, or you can use the round ball magnetic holders included in the set. I even installed one on a metal table leg to watch my roommates doggie and since the cameras are magnetic I was able to stick it right to the leg - easy-peasy! What I didn't care for was the screws that come with the round ball magnetic holders. I ended up using 1-inch large flat headed nails and they worked great, except the ball kept spinning on a couple of my locations. I was able to keep it from spinning by placing a nail brad on the side of holder. I love the magnetic ball mounts because you can adjust the angle of the camera to get the exact view you want.I DROPPED ITI dropped one of the cameras during the camera installation. I was trying to use double-sided tape instead of the screws to mount the magnetic holder. It didn't work and I dropped the camera on the cement at my front door. The camera kept working, but only showed red and not full color. I quit out of the app, but that didn't help. I ended up rebooting the camera and that fixed the problem. To reboot, open the battery compartment and remove all the batteries. Wait about a minute, then replace the batteries. The camera will re-sync with the base station automatically. Once I did that the camera returned to full-color function.CAMERA QUALITYCamera quality is exceptional. The cameras also have a very wide vision so you can see quite a bit of area (not just in front of the camera).SOUNDThere is none. I was bummed about this. My previous system recorded sound along with the video. There is no sound function on the Arlo model.BATTERYMy old Arlo system had rechargeable batteries. This keep cost down and the batteries were great quality that lasted a long time - I only had to charge them every month or two. This Arlo model includes non-rechargeable lithium batteries. I'm guessing they are long life, but is an expense to replace them. They are Panasonic 123A Lithium Batteries and each camera uses four batters. Replacement cost (24 pack of batteries) is $47! I will update my review when the batteries run out - at this time I don't know how long the batteries will last.THE APPThe app is super easy to use and very intuitive. There is a screen for each of the cameras and you can watch them all simultaneously. The video is stored in the cloud (on Netgear's secure servers). If you want to keep the video, you can easy download it to your device. In my case I have the app on both my iPad and my iPhone.4-STAR RATINGI was tempted to give this a 3-star rating because it doesn't include audio and doesn't include rechargeable batteries. I love this system so much and it is so easy to use, i only marked down by 1 star.

First off, the clarity is amazig, even for the 2 camera basic 720P system. I loved how easy it was to install, and the setup took less thatn 5 minutes. I will be purchasing another 2 camera add-on in the near future. Thanks Arlo!
