Great travel camera

I also have the Sony 1/2.3 variant, which is far inferior. The 1"" sensor on the RX100 III, along with the fast maximum aperture make a huge difference. This is a great travel camera and preferred when I don't want to carry around my Nikon D610 and almost 50 lbs of lenses.

For the size, this camera produces some really nice images. I really enjoy having the flip screen for selfies too. I believe I bought this a couple years ago for just under $600 so not sure why the price has gone up since then.

I went back and forth for several days before choosing this camera. Like many , I have a good phone (iPhone 8 plus) and cameras on iPhones (and others) have become VERY good , specially in ideal conditions. I wanted something reasonably priced to complement my iPhone for travel and more technical shots (night, macro etc). I contemplated getting a nikon DSLR (D3400 or D5600) to learn photography but got scared by the size/weight. Also I am not sure that a pure amateur can do wonder with a DSLR. A friend of mine talked me into the Sony Rx100 series as being a step up from an iPhone, not too intimidating , easy to fit in a pocket and with dummy proof modes.I didn't want to spend 600-1000 for my use so I looked for an open box and found a great deal on a RX100-iii.Now lets talk about the camera itself:In auto mode, it is already great. Takes good pictures (well it should given the price range) and it is a step above the iPhone, specially if you start zooming / photoshop your RAW footage.HOWEVER, be aware that:-The menus are extremely convoluted on the camera it self-Connecting it to your phone requires to setup a dedicated wifi network (which means you can't be connected to the internet while you are connected to the phone. Well you can join your main network with the camera and the phone but I havent succeeded yet)-You CAN control the camera through an app on your phone, which is very convenient to ""touch to focus"" since the camera doesn't have a touch screen. This requires downloading/updating the play memory app ON THE CAMERA, which requires connecting from the camera to your home wifi AND login in onto the sony account they force you to create , ie type your email and password on the phone using the tiny wheels and buttons.COME ON SONY ! ITs 2018 ! For F SakeNow its time to update the firmware on the camera You'd think you could do that from the phone since it has Wifi? No! too easy. You have to download some software on your computer.I first tried with my MacBook running Mac OS X 10.13 and that is a 2 step process bear with me. First you have to download the Upgrader tool specially for 10.13 (the main one doesn't work ) . Then you have to download and install the firmware update tool. Didn't work. Tried on another mac, didn't work. Read forums its a widespread problem. Finally I used a PC, it worked but feels extremely convoluted and feels like the software (buggy) was written by 8 year old who went to summer coding camp.Sony if you read me, this is unacceptable at this price point and in this day and age. Everything should be user friendly and smooth. We are talking mass market products, not professional stuff. How did you have 5 years since the release of the first RX100 and never came up with some decent software/ update system.Overall, I think I will be able to do wonders with the camera once I learn how to use it, there is a lot of potential but Im shocked at a company like sony being unable to produce a $500-$1000 camera with user friendly material .

great little camera

after 3 years of hard use this camera continues to function as a dependable tool.i'm a naturalist and photographer, usually carrying this camera and a canon 5D with a long lens multiple days each week.the sony performs very well, the tiltable LCD makes shooting ground level images possible with ease, the electronic viewfinder allows easy shooting in bright sunlight, the auto focus works great, but when manual focus is required the 'focus' ring provides quick sharp images.these small cameras have great depth of focus which is important when fotoing close ups of mushrooms, flowers etc, and explains why i rarely use my canon macro lenses.in short, i understand the sony's limitations and work within its abilities and for my tasks am unaware of any camera that surpasses it.after thousands of images its charged and awaiting mondayi hope one day a sony update will include gps. when that occurs the sony mk3 will be retired.

I bought this used and am so happy with it. The quality of images is impeccable. The video it captures is very high-quality and the sound it records too is very impressive. I absolutely love having the manual settings available and the image stability on the videos works very well. The battery lasts a good while. Very pleased with this camera.

Photo quality not so great in low light. No touch screen, no 4K video. More expensive than some comparable enthusiast compacts. I did not keep it. See my review of Panasonic LX10 for details and sample photos.

I am a complete novice when it comes to cameras but the shots I go with this camera can not be beat. I was continually astonished and amazed by the quality of the photos with this PNS camera. This was an amazing investment. The ease of use and the ability to transfer photos wirelessly sold me alone. I couldn't have asked for a better camera to capture the memories of my most recent trip. Best investment I have ever made in a camera! Also love the selfie option especially when traveling to such phenomenal places without a picture partner. I would buy this again and again.
