Consider the ELEMNT BOLT instead; Turn-by-turn navigation is poor
by Valued Customer on July 31, 2018

The newer ELEMNT BOLT is a superior device in almost all respects. It is smaller, sleeker, and has a louder beeper (important for navigation). The only thing you give up is a bit of vertical screen real estate (ELEMNT screen is 240 x 400 pixels whereas BOLT screen is 240 x 320 pixels). The main consequences of this are that: on the main page, you can see only 9 parameters simultaneously with the BOLT versus 11 with the ELEMNT; on the cue-sheet page, only 2 turns with the BOLT versus 3 with the ELEMNT, and on the map page, slightly less area with the BOLT than with the ELEMNT. Both units run exactly the same software and have the same features. The displays of both units are monochrome. Moreover, they are bilevel displays (like the old-fashioned bitmap displays of the 1980s), so there is no antialiasing. Small text looks somewhat crude, and streets on the map display have the ""jaggies"", but these are more cosmetic issues than practical ones. The smaller physical size of the BOLT screen makes these anomalies less apparent.I purchased this device mainly for navigation, not for fitness. In this regard, performance is disappointing. As I mentioned above, the beeper that alerts of upcoming turns is barely audible. I am unable to hear it at all if there is any automobile traffic around. This issue seems to have been addressed with the BOLT. When I ride with my wife, I am able to hear the BOLT on her bike from several feet away.Another big disappointment is that the routing cue sheet does not scroll after each turn. Instead it shows turns that have already been completed with negative distance-to-turn values. To get it to update, I either have to scroll manually, or flip to the map and back to the cue sheet. According to WAHOO customer support, it is supposed to automatically scroll but in what I consider an undesirable way. They say it should scroll so that the upcoming turn is always at the bottom of the page with the two previously completed turns visible above it. I would much rather see the upcoming turn at the top of the page with the next two turns below it. With the latest firmware (version 1982) there is no automatic scrolling at all. I am still in contact with WAHOO customer support about this issue, but they have yet to acknowledge it as a bug. Finally, there is not enough warning upcoming turns. The unit doesn't start alerting until I am right on top of a turn, sometimes not until I am actually in the turn. I would like an advance alert, say a quarter mile before the turn, and then a second alert at the turn. I did a recent bike tour using the RideWithGPS app on my cell phone, and I really enjoyed that feature.Despite these issues, I am pleased with the device overall and am becoming addicted to tracking my rides on Strava. However, I am not sure that I would recommend purchasing it solely for navigation. A handlebar mount for a cell phone might be a better solution. For fitness tracking, definitely - but go with a BOLT instead.

Love my ELEMNT

Love my ELEMNT. Very intuitive and user friendly. I use ride with gps to use other routes or create my own. There is a minor learning curve but it's been very good. I've gotten rained on and no problems. I wish it were a little better for going off course but that hasn't been a big issue so far. Ride with gps is the fault at times too. I'd give the ELEMNT a 90%rating.

County Bikes and Beer ride where a 35 mile fun ride ended up being a 62 mile grind due

Bought this after a San Diego County Bikes and Beer ride where a 35 mile fun ride ended up being a 62 mile grind due to some person's removing the road markers. So far the turn by turn feature is awesome with the ""Take Me To"" feature is a life saver. I change the metrics I want to see on the fly and depending on my training needs. I can also pace myself better when Im trying to get a personal best. Not too happy with the original mount. I opted for a K Edge Wahoo combo so I can mount a GoPro and a light.

I bought this unit from Amazon with an $80 cash back offer at the time . There is miss you with the cash back offer so I contacted support and I took care of it.I like the large screen and I really am not a touch screen fan so the buttons are extremely helpful. Screen is very clear never an issue in the Sun.The one thing this does not do that garment does is you need to pre implement your turning points before using turn by turn direction. I don't use turn by turn direction so it's not a big deal for me but I can with a little bit of planning. Solid unit for the price and probly better than garment in many ways. Pros and cons to everything

Make sure you understand their rebate policy before you purchase

The ELEMENT Itself is fine but the first dealins with the company were less than positive. They ran an $80 rebate that is handled by a 3rd party ..the 3rd party wants access to your bank accounts for payment and doesnt offer anyother method of payment. great way to get out of paying rebates.I am hoping I have NOT made a mistake dealing with Wahoo in the long run.

The company has made a key trade-off achieve a superior usability that includes long battery life, continuous communication with satellites, audio/visual prompting at intersections, a clear, crisp, scaleable display. So what doesn't the ELEMNT do? Re-routing on-the-fly is the primary gap in functionality compared to the alternatives. That said, the alternatives reportedly do a poor job of it.WIth the ELEMNT, you create your route before you ride using one of a handful of partner mapping tools (Strava and Ride with GPS are two examples). The phone will sync with the cloud and the ELEMNT with the phone. Bam: the route is on board and ready to ride. If you decide to take an alternate route, you're on your own but if you can navigate yourself back to the planned route, the ELEMNT will place you on the map and recalculate your position and metrics (such as mileage to the next turn, or turns, and end point). That works for me.There are on-board maps and it is certainly possible to re-route your course mid-ride using your phone with the ""Take me to [insert destination here]"" feature, though roads and turns will be system-generated. Plus, the routes you have created in the past are stored in memory and available to select.I also appreciate the ability to send a link home so my position can be monitored by family and friends (important for back country as well as in-town training rides - which I often ride solo. The ability to be notified of incoming calls and see text messages on the display is a good safety feature - keeping me from reaching for the phone while rolling. There's a lot more to say about this product - the Wahoo web site is rich - check it out. Your biggest decision won't be between a Wahoo and another branded alternative, it will likely be a decision between the ELEMNT and the Bolt. That one boils down to the size of the display - functionality is identical.

On button not easy!

I have had this Element for less than two months and used less than 10 times. Today it would not turn on after being fully charged yesterday. The bars worked as it was charging yesterday, but today when we went to ride, it was dead as a door nail. I liked it so well, I purchased one for my husband for his birthday ten days ago. Now I'm afraid his will do the same thing. I need it replaced.I updated by rating from 1 star to 3 stars since I was finally able to get it turned on. After my husband checked out the internet for people who could not turn their Element on, someone said to hold the on button for 10 sec. I tried for a lot longer than 10 seconds but it did finally come on.Hopefully, this is not ongoing.
