Great Device, Beware of Vendor

Love the product, has all the features I need just a bit large. Purchased from GPS City and would probably select another vendor next time. They wouldn't take an unopened product back inside the return window without a restocking fee. All I wanted to do is exchange it for the smaller version as I ordered wrong one, but it turns out I love it and I'm keeping it. Not shopping with GPS City anymore, beware of returns there as return policy information was misleading.

Overall this is a great product for those going out in the backcountry. It's nice to have the added security of knowing that you can get help, regardless of location (Unless you're in a cave, then you're screwed). Satellite communication takes a few minutes usually, but I've sent and received text messages so far, no issues. The weather forecast is also a nice feature that can be very helpful in certain situation when forecasts change hourly. Tracking, allowing family and others to see your progress, is great. The subscription costs are completely reasonable in my book, so no issues there.I remember reading one review complaining that there's no touch screen - this is a outdoor device, one that's going to be used in the rainwhere touchscreens no longer function. So with that in mind, I'm very glad it has physical buttons which remain functional regardless of conditions.Battery life seems good. After about 12 hours of use, sending/receiving a text, getting the weather once, tracking updating every 30 minutes, and turning the screen on regularly, I was at about 75%.The biggest negative is, as many others have said, the GPS planning functionality. My main gripe is that it doesn't snap to trails when plotting a route. You can only place straight, point to point, lines down. This is a real bummer when that 'snap' functionality exists in other GPS apps right on my cellphone.

Great GPS Unit with a ton of features
by Valued Customer on July 30, 2018

I have been looking at GPS units for well over 2 years. I finally saved up enough and purchased this unit. Usually, when I am backpacking I am in areas where there is sporadic to no cell signal. I think the unit is simple and intuitive to navigate and use. It holds a charge and does exactly what it says it does. I usually take a screenshot of the weather before heading on any trips and have found being able to get realtime weather forecasts a day or two after I have started my trip can really change what I plan for the day. I have been out twice when the forecast said partly cloudy with little to no chance of rain and pulled the weather forecast from this unit a day later which said t-storms within a given timeframe. Knowing that I needed to hump it if I wanted to stay dry. The texting feature works well, sometimes it can take 15-20 mins to send the message as the unit is looking for satellites. Family/Friends are able to follow along on my hikes and see where we are real time and how fast we are moving. I chose this unit specifically for the onboard maps. Last year, my phone fell out of my pocket as I was climbing over a fallen tree and the screen hit a rock. The phone was ruined. I couldn't use or see anything on the screen. If that would have happened earlier in the trip, I would have had to spend more time with my map making sure I was headed on the right trail. The unit is completely independent but connects to your phone for convenience. The earthmate app works great and I can do almost everything through my phone. This gave my family piece of mind while I am backpacking for multiple days and that alone was worth its weight in gold.

Great for making sure others know where I am on the motorcycle or hiking trails when I don't have cell phone reception. It's comforting!

Great device for exploring and flying! Little hard to use - not super intuitive and GUI feels and sounds like it's from the late 90's. Just what you would expect from Garmin I suppose! :-) Little on the expensive side for plans. Seems like everyone wants $20 a month for everything these days.

Helped us find a .7 mile hike down versus a 7 mile climb up for an extraction point after injury!

I mostly purchased this to communicate with my family members while out on the trails (Ocala National Forest and the Appalachian Trail) and for that it works great, all family members get my messages and I receive messages from them when I want or need to retrieve them (I set it this way so I don't get messages while I am enjoying myself!) Best thing so far is that while on a week long section hike of the AT my husband's knee locked up after a few days of discomfort and while we were only 7 miles from our end point we had a mountain in our path and there was no way to know if he was going to be able to make it over that climb. Thankfully we had the Inreach! I used the map feature to spot a cross trail that was .2 miles behind us that lead to a road about .5 miles down the trail. I was able to text a hiker shuttle guy who picked us up right at the end of that road! All from the Garmin Inreach! I have not had to use the SOS feature yet and hopefully I do not have to but so far I love it! Best $500 I have spent on gear!

Lifesaver!

I recently purchased the Garmin inReach SE before an offshore fishing tournament to be able to use the texting capabilities to stay in touch with family onshore. After a series of random and incredibly unlucky events, our new, well equipped sportfishing boat lost both generators, both engines and began taking on water over 120 miles from shore. With no VHF, we used a satellite phone to contact the USCG who launched search and rescue efforts. After numerous calls on the sat phone, the battery began to die and we had to switch to solely communicating via text messages through the Garmin inReach SE.I cannot speak highly enough about this small, easy to use device! I was able to quickly and reliably stay in contact with the USCG and family onshore which led to the successful rescue of our crew and boat. The battery life on the Garmin was incredible. I had my iPhoneX tethered to it via Bluetooth and the Garmin only burned 50% battery over a 22 hour period of near constant use.Despite having a satellite phone, EPIRB, and all of the proper safety equipment, the Garmin is what kept us in touch through a very harrowing ordeal. I've only had the device for a week, but I will not go offshore without it again!
