Description

A telescope is a great gift for families and beginners interested in space and the stars. Especially a telescope like the Orion StarBlast II 4.5 EQ. It's a genuine, real reflector telescope with sophisticated features to help inspire stargazers night after night.
With its 4.5 inch-diameter reflector tube and sturdy equatorial (EQ) mount with slow-motion controls, this telescope goes beyond the capabilities of smaller beginner models to support families as their interest in space grows into a lifelong appreciation of stargazing and science. The compact Orion StarBlast II 4.5 EQ is a favorite of both beginners and expert astronomers alike, thanks to its great optics, convenient portability, and easy-to-use operation.
The StarBlast II 4.5 EQ will amaze the whole family with bright views thanks to its big, 4.5 inch-aperture telescope tube, which collects a lot of light from the night sky to send bright, clear images of objects in space to the telescope eyepiece for viewing. The telescope's combination of short 450mm focal length and sizable 4.5 inch aperture means the StarBlast II 4.5 EQ will provide brighter views at any magnification compared to longer focal length telescopes, which makes it easier for everyone, and especially beginners, to locate interesting sights in the night sky. Using a telescope allows curious families to explore the sparkling night sky and search out interesting objects to observe. Use the StarBlast II 4.5 EQ to look at fascinating craters, valleys and mountains on the Moon; and bright planets like Jupiter, Saturn and Mars. Even distant objects like star clusters, brighter nebulas and galaxies can be seen in this petite reflector telescope.
Along with the complete telescope, mount and tripod, the Orion Starblast II 4.5 Equatorial Reflector also includes 25mm and 10mm Sirius Plossl eyepieces (18 x and 45 x respectively), EZ Finder II sight, MoonMap 260 and more.

  • The whole family will enjoy the StarBlast II 4.5 EQ thanks to its great optics, convenient portability, and easy-to-use operation
  • Views of everything from the Moon and planets to distant objects like star clusters and galaxies appear bright and clear through this petite telescope
  • A fantastic wide-field astronomy telescope with reflecting optics large enough to keep you and your family busy viewing for years to come
  • The included EQ-1 mount makes it easy to keep moving objects centered in the eyepiece with its handy slow-motion controls
  • Included 25mm and 10mm Sirius Plossl eyepieces provide 18-power and 45-power views right out of the box! Also includes a MoonMap 260, EZ Finder II reflex sight, adjustable-height tripod and more

Great product, but I should rate less than 4 stars but I feel that this product still has more benefit than the drawbacks in the long run. When I got the box in the mail, it looked like someone return. The outer box was opened and retaped. When I opened the outer box on of the sides fell down. meaning it had been ripped or cut down both sides. The inner box, was also cut opened prior and re taped, but the second tape was also recut. The box looked like it had been dropped on one side. But there wasn't evidence of damaged thankfully.Inspecting the telescope it looks like there may be something on the main mirror, but it hasn't affected the overall functionality of it.Like I said, great potential but not a great first impression.Edit: After I've had a chanceto use it a few times. I can cofidently say that the 10mm eyepiece that comes with this is less than idea. When using it either buy itself or in the balon, it is letting far too little light through to allow for adequate focusing both with the focusing knobs, or even with your eye after you get it as clear as possible. The 20mm lenses is fantastic. I have to reduce a star because this is effectively cutting the usability in half.

It was somewhat hard to assemble from the instructions, but we found an online video that took care of that. It's of very good quality and my daughter loves it!

If you're like my family and you like to put presents together in a time induced panic after children go to sleep on Christmas Eve you'll want to hear this. You'll order this telescope because you have a kid that wants to see space. You're a great parent. However, you're aware of your strengths and your weaknesses putting stuff together is a weakness. For my entire 7 person family. You'll be under the assumption that this piece of equipment will come partially assembled. It does not. This will take you hours. This is nowhere near partially assembled. Good luck.P.S.How can you have figure 1b, without a figure 1a?! Dumb.P.P.SNice telescope tho'

A decent and powerful budget scope

A decent telescope for the money. I've been able to get decent views of Saturn with a 17mm eyepiece and a X2 barlows. The other day I was able to get Jupiter with enough details to faintly make out some of the atmosphere variation/weather bands on the planet. However, invest in a better star finder than the one this telescope comes with. It will make the job of tracking and finding objects 1000 times easier. In conclusion, it is a decent budget telescope capable of giving sharp views of the moon, decent views of Jupiter and Saturn, and perhaps Venus and Mars too. It will even do ok with some of the brighter deep space objects, but that's about it. At this price range you have to be realistic with your expectations. Also, learn to collimate the optics. It is not that difficult, and it is a must. If you are not willing to learn to collimate, avoid the scope. With regular prolonged and heavy use you'll probably have to give it a touch up collimation once or twice a year.

I was a little disappointed with this telescope

I was a little disappointed with this telescope. There are a few plastic components that seem to cheapen the overall quality of the optical tube. There is no dovetail bracket on the tube, and even when purchasing Orion's dovetail adapter, it would not attach to the tube in a practical way. I wanted to upgrade the EZ finder scope to a 6x finder scope, but that proved to be much more difficult than it should be. The EZ finder scope is very cheap plastic, I suppose it works as intended though. The EQ mount that came with it is sufficient and probably the best thing about this telescope. The views of the moon were nice, I used a Barlow 2x with the 10mm and could see details of many lunar features. I cannot comment on any other planetary views, because I sold the telescope before I got a chance to test it out.Overall I'm giving this telescope 3 stars because it is a good telescope for beginners and casual stargazers, but definitely not something for serious amateur astronomers. You cannot make upgrades conveniently, and it feels cheap.
