Nice way to see what you've never seen before

Since I got this microscope, I've been exploring all manner of things around me. I do not need it for any professional reasons so I really just use it for hobby and entertainment. Since you can prepare slides, only your imagination is the limit. I so far created a large library of digital pictures on my computer. It comes with a starter set of slides. The interface is USB and thus allows you easy connection to the computer. The details are very crisp, though I don't have another microscope so I have nothing really to compare it to. It works with three AA batteries. One major drawback is that you are limited to an 800 x magnification. The adjustment buttons need some getting used to. I give it 4 stars because of the limit in magnification.

Basic high-magnification microsope that's challenging to focus

This microscope is a very lightweight and simple device, with a convenient USB interface for outputting a high magnification image on your computer screen - I use Photo Booth on my MacBook, which works great without any effort to set up (and lets you save snapshots as you go). The included prepared slides contained enough items of interest to keep my 7-year old daughter's attention, and got her interested in finding other things around the house to examine (eyelashes, dog hair, etc.). The challenge I had with this scope is with the focus and stage adjustments - the x-y adjustments seem to coarse for a scope with this high a magnification (items immediately jump out of view as you bump the knobs), and focus is immediately lost once movement begins (making it difficult to see whether you've brought the item into view). The focus knob has a reasonably fine adjustment, which is helpful with as narrow a depth of field as the scope has, but breathing in the vicinity of the scope seems to cause it to drift out of focus, and constant adjustment is required.

Really nice home microscope

This a good microscope that is a big step up from the previous one I had at home. Having a microscope that is pluggable adds a whole new dimension to viewing specimens. Focusing can be a little tricky at first, but after going very slowly the first several times, I got it down. The images are great. I've used the microscope with a laptop and a desktop with Windows and haven't had any problems with them recognizing it as a webcam. The magnification is 800 x and I can look at both small and larger objects. My kids and I just use it for fun around the house because we find looking at slides interesting, but I think it would be great to use in the classroom too.

It has been great for both of those

I've mostly used this to inspect manual solder joints and damaged traces on PCBs. It has been great for both of those. It doesn't have the longest focus range, so really heavily-populated boards can be harder to see clearly, but I only use this when I need a really close look. The USB stuff was easy to get going on my laptop.

This is a significant upgrade from my previous Pluggable microscope. The previous model was really only useful for looking at things in much the manner of a magnifying glass, only better. This model allows the use of slides and examinations can be made at the cellular level, which is a feature my wife was greatly wanting in a replacement microscope. The previous model we have required somewhat specific software to function, whereas this model works perfectly with the inbuilt Windows 10 camera app, making for a much better experience over our last pluggable purchase, which we had admittedly enjoyed as well. This is a perfect purchase for a home hobbyist science kit.

Although it's clearly made of cheap plastic construction, the instrument really works. You can see really small stuff and it is possible to move around the slide using the fine adjustment knobs. The two lighting options are a nice touch. Digital output is clear and sharp. I didn't try the optical scope. You can only really focus on very thin samples, but I guess that's normal for 800 x magnification.

Excellent beginner microscope

Setup was extremely easy with my Windows 10 PC-just plug it in and wait a bit and you're ready to go. The kit includes some example slides and several blank ones in a nice little storage container. One thing to note is that because of the design of the microscope, you will need to use items that allow light to pass through, so you cannot look at anything too solid. Still, it is an excellent basic microscope for the beginner and the screen display easily allows for more than one person to look at the item at the same time, which enhanced our discussion as we were studying an item. Overall, we were impressed with the high definition images on the screen, but it is a shame the magnification isn't adjustable.

I love that the magnification is powerful enough to something that is 5 microns. The detail and crisp is nice. The video is also fun to watch if you have cells or microorganisms that are animated.

Great for children. Easy to use. Tons of features. Best microscope on the market I have seen

This was mostly a great purchase for the children. It is easy to set up and use, even independently of the computer. And the slides included are very nice. Although it was not very funny to have the 8 year old ask what ""rabbit testes"" are. Seriously? You are going to include rabbit testes? On a slide? OK. But that small point aside, this is the best microscope on the market for a reasonable price that can supplement the 8-14 year old child's public school education at home. The slides are easy to place, the lens is easy to focus, and you can do a ton of things on the computer as well. We had bought a number of other microscopes, but they do not compare in terms of ease of use and features. As a side note, I would like to say how disappointed I have been in the common core approach to education in the last few years. Even in middle school, ""science"" really means nothing. No lab experience. No thrill of exploration. No hands-on anything. Just general discussions of things like watersheds and a lot of coloring projects on paper. The curriculum is worse than the worksheets of 30 years ago, IMHO. For those of us who want to stimulate our children's learning of STEM disciplines, making purchases of these kinds of equipment (this one included) is going to be an increasingly necessary part of the education budget. I do hope that we can also pressure our educational policy makers to get back to doing real science with children in the meantime. Khan academy is your friend BTW.
