Very little development has taken place on personal desktop scanners since the Windows Vista days, which is why so many still being sold are not compatible with the Windows 10 64 bit OS. This one is compatible with any Windows 10 OS. It also provides very accurate color and resolution for photographs and does a respectable job with document conversion to PDF. Installation is simple, but use the online installation procedure through the Canon website, not the CD, for the latest driver and best way to execute the package. I only recommend installing the mandatory 'ScanGear' package (driver and base utility). Embedded vendor software is usually sub par and can cause conflicts. I never trust the 'add-on' freebies on hardware CDs. Your own software for working with scanned images is better. As for hardware alternatives, All-in-ones only last as long as the inkjets stay unclogged or the ever rising price on inkjet cartridges are cost effective over buying a new All-in-one. People who do a lot of scanning of old photographs prefer stand-alone, desktop scanners. Dedicated auto-feed photo scanners always, always leave lines and offer poorer resolution. This purchase replaced an older scanner I use for retouching and recovering old family photographs. It is so much better in color representation and resolution I plan on going back over many pics I have already treated. It is also quiet and about a third faster than my old scanner. This is a very cost effective, good scanner.
